Do Golf Carts Need Insurance?

Short answer: it depends on where and how the cart is used. Long answer: even when insurance isn't legally required, going without it leaves real gaps that surprise a lot of owners. Here's how to think it through.
When Insurance Is Generally Required
- Street-legal LSVs with a plate. Once a low-speed vehicle is registered for street use, state financial responsibility laws generally apply — liability minimums similar to a car, and in Florida, PIP as well.
- Local golf cart permits. Many town and state permit programs (South Carolina's, for example) ask for proof of liability coverage before issuing a cart decal.
- Communities and HOAs. Some gated communities, resorts, and golf clubs require members to carry liability protection on carts used inside the property.
When It May Not Be Required — But Worth Considering
A cart used purely on private property often has no legal insurance requirement. Owners still frequently choose coverage because of three exposures:
- Liability. Golf carts carry passengers — often kids — and injuries happen. The intention of liability coverage is to respond when an owner is held responsible for injury or property damage.
- Theft. Carts are easy to steal and easy to resell. With modern lithium models running $10,000–$25,000+, theft protection is one of the most common reasons owners buy a policy.
- Physical damage. Storm damage, fire, collision — the intention of physical damage coverage is to address repair or replacement of the cart itself.
Doesn't My Homeowners Policy Cover It?
Sometimes a homeowners policy may extend limited protection to a golf cart used on your premises or for golfing — but that protection is often narrow, may exclude street use entirely, and may offer little or nothing for theft of or damage to the cart itself. Policies differ, so this is a question for a licensed agent with your actual policy in hand. The intention of a dedicated golf cart policy is to close those gaps with coverage designed around how carts are actually used.
The Bottom Line
If your cart or LSV touches a public road, assume insurance is part of the deal. If it stays on private property, insurance may be optional but is often inexpensive relative to the value it protects. Either way, a five-minute call answers it: find the number for your state or request a quote online. And if you also own a boat, jet ski, motorcycle, or Slingshot, ask about multi-policy discounts.
